Is it dangerous to develop AI?

By: Raul Santiago Insuasty Castañeda

For ages human beings have been the most intelligent organisms over the earth surface. However, many people fear that something can remove us from that position. But, what can become more intelligent that us? The answer mat sound like a terminator movie but many experts predict that in few years, computers will overthrow our our cognitive skills throughout Artificial Intelligence. According to Stanford University, which is one of the leading institutions in this subject “AI is the science and engineering of making of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs (2017, para. 1)”. But what would happen if these machines become more intelligent than us? Do we have to fear about this matter? The purpose of this article is to look from different perspectives Artificial Intelligence threat and try to reach a conclusion about the risks and myths of this technology.

On the one hand the development of artificial intelligence will improve our lives in many aspects, such as reducing errors in complex processes, exploring hostile environments (like outer space and oceanic floor) and assessing human beings in their daily life. Other distinguished functions of AI are digital assistants that think logically because of their lack of emotions, the use of machines to carry out monotonous tasks and assessing doctors when medicating and making precise surgeries. Michael Hanuschik, CEO and revolutionary entrepreneur in non-invasive surgery states:

I certainly don’t believe we’ll program ourselves into oblivion any time soon. AIs are specialized tools. Very powerful tools, but tools nonetheless. AIs are great at making statistical guesses based on enormous data sets, but they have no real understanding or comprehension of the tasks they are performing (2017, “AI will help people make decisions and enhance our lives,” para 1)

On the other hand, the use of artificial intelligence has several disadvantages and dangers. Strong affirmations respect this topic have been made by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motorsports and Space X “until people see robots go down the street killing people they don’t know how to react” and “artificial intelligence is the biggest risk we face as a civilization and needs to be checked as soon as possible (2017)” put in evidence the worry of some experts about this technology. But which are the possible risks that the human race face respect AI? Many scientists are concerned because they don’t know exactly how this new technology will behave, a clear example of the preoccupation respect this topic is that as human beings we control the world not because our strength or size, it is because our intelligence but what would happen if something overpasses our limits? According to Wisestep.com, some disadvantages of AI also can be the huge costs of this technology, that machines do not improve with expertise, that AI is not able to produce new ideas or be creative and that unemployment will rise because of the better machines abilities.

Finally lets think on this for a minute, what would happen if some ants are avoiding the construction of a great construction? Probably we will kill many and leave others without their habitat, however we are not evil people or we don’t have the intention of finish with them, also if think it a little bit more it is impossible to talk with ants and tell them that we are destroying their home because of a new edification that will be very important for our society, these animals have not the enough intelligence to understand us. The latter situation can also happen with artificial intelligence and human beings, nevertheless in this case we are the ants. Artificial Intelligence will improve our lives in many aspects and their development will be completed in few decades, however it is important that this subject gains the necessary popularity within the governments and countries around the world to guarantee the security of our specie respect this unknown intelligent machines.
