Is AI a benefit for humanity?

Hi guys the following investigation is the "first synthesis project delivery" and consisted on researching about an specific topic about technology and nature. The topic that we have chosen is artificial intelligence, so I hope you enjoy this information.



What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence or AI is the development of computer systems that are able to make tasks that require human intelligence to be done, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages. Today artificial intelligence is not a science fiction portray, you can find it from Siri in your iPhone to autonomous cars that are riding in this moment throughout the streets in many cities.

Nowadays artificial intelligence is properly known as narrow AI (or weak AI) and it is designed to perform a simple specific task like making facial recognition or internet searches. However, in a future the goal of many researches is to reach AGI (or strong AI) which will overtake every human cognitive task.

Is beneficial this kind of intelligence?

The goal of many researchers on this topic is to make AI beneficial for society because this technology will control your car, airplane, pace market and automatic training system. So the challenge of scientist is to achieve AI become obedient to the instructions given by human beings. Another preoccupation of scientists is that the creation of a super-intelligence will be the biggest invention of humans because it might help us finishing war, disease and poverty. However, researches fear that it will be the last invention of us.

The opinions about AI are divided because some think that AI will be never be achieved, they argue that the intelligence nature gave us cannot be replicated by humans. Others insist that the creation of a super-intelligence is beneficial. However the Future of Life Institute recognizes that the potential of AI can cause, if it is not controlled, a great harm.

Can AI be dangerous?

Researchers agree that Artificial intelligence is unlikely to exhibit humans emotions and as a result become malevolent. However they think in two possible scenarios were AI might become a risk.

1. The AI is programmed to do something devastating: The preoccupation is that AI systems can fall in the hands of the wrong person and cause massive casualties, the programmer can introduce instructions that make the weapon extremely difficult to turn off.

2. The AI is programmed to do something beneficial, but it develops a destructive method for achieving its goal: This can happen when the artificial intelligence wants to make an instruction given by us but throughout an inadequate method. For example, if you order your car to take you to the airport as quicker as possible, the AI might accomplish your order but crashing your car, entering wrong way streets and probably increasing the velocity to unexpected levels.




Why the recent interest in AI safety?

Many important scientists and important technological people as Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak have expressed their concerns about AI and the capacity they would have to control the world. The human race has the total control of the planet because our intelligence, how can we explain animals that we are destroying their homes because of geopolitical causes? How can we explain ants that we will destroy their colony because many people will be able to study in the new school that will be built over their home? That's our preoccupation, that we AI overpass our cognitive capacities and control the world without our awareness. We are superior in comparison with other species because of our intelligence, we can control tigers using our intelligence but what will happen if our intelligence is overpassed by machines? we will not be able to control them.
